Zostel launches community-led backpacker hostel in Varanasi, strengthening presence in India’s spiritual travel circuit

India’s leading backpacker hostel brand Zostel has expanded its footprint with the launch of Zostel Varanasi, marking the brand’s entry into one of the country’s most culturally significant destinations. Positioned in the heart of the old city near Dashashwamedh Ghat, the property aims to offer immersive travel experiences for the growing segment of Gen Z and millennial travellers seeking deeper cultural engagement.

Strategic expansion into spiritual destinations

The Varanasi launch aligns with Zostel’s broader strategy of expanding across India’s spiritual and heritage circuits. The company notes that youth travellers increasingly prefer destinations that combine culture, community and authentic local experiences.

Internal travel data from the brand indicates that over 95 percent of visitors to Zostel’s spiritual destinations belong to Gen Z and millennial segments, while international travellers contribute roughly 10 percent of the overall demand.

By entering Varanasi—widely regarded as the spiritual capital of India—the hostel brand aims to strengthen its presence in destinations known for cultural depth and heritage-led tourism.

Design and accommodation features

Located close to the historic ghats and bustling lanes of the old city, Zostel Varanasi blends contemporary hostel design with local influences inspired by Banaras’ earthy tones and textures.

Key features of the property include:

  • Modern dormitory-style accommodation

  • Private rooms for travellers seeking added privacy

  • Shared social spaces designed to encourage community interaction

  • A rooftop gathering area overlooking the city skyline

The layout reflects Zostel’s community-driven model, where common spaces serve as hubs for interaction, storytelling and cultural exchange among travellers.

Immersive cultural experiences

Beyond accommodation, the property focuses on experiential travel through curated local programming. Guests can participate in activities designed to connect them with Varanasi’s traditions and daily life.

These include:

  • Sunrise walks along the ghats

  • Participation in the iconic evening Ganga Aarti

  • Guided heritage walks through historic neighbourhoods

  • Cultural interactions with local communities

The brand positions the hostel as a place for experiential exploration rather than simply a transit stay, reflecting a shift toward experience-led travel among younger travellers.

Founder’s perspective

Commenting on the launch, Aviral Gupta, Founder and CEO of Zostel and Zo World, said the move reflects the growing interest among young travellers in India’s sacred destinations.

According to Gupta, cities like Varanasi offer transformative experiences that go beyond traditional sightseeing. He emphasised that the company plans to continue investing in destinations known for cultural richness and meaningful travel experiences.

Part of broader growth strategy

The Varanasi property follows Zostel’s recent expansion into Kufri, signalling the brand’s continued focus on experience-driven destinations as part of its 2026 growth roadmap.

With India’s backpacker and youth travel segment expanding rapidly, the launch strengthens Zostel’s positioning as a community-focused hospitality brand connecting travellers with local culture and destinations.
