Indian Hotels Company Limited has announced the signing of a new Taj hotel in Guwahati, marking the debut of the iconic luxury brand in Assam’s capital city. The agreement was formalized in the presence of Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The upcoming 250-key Taj Guwahati will combine the renovation of an existing hotel inventory with the development of new rooms, further strengthening the group’s presence in Northeast India’s fastest-growing commercial hub.
Redevelopment and Expansion Plan
The project involves the comprehensive refurbishment and repositioning of an existing 150-room property, along with the addition of 100 newly built rooms, bringing the total capacity to 250 keys.
The hotel will be developed across an expanded land parcel spanning more than nine acres, allowing the property to be positioned as a large urban hospitality destination in the heart of the city.
This redevelopment approach reflects a growing trend within India’s hospitality sector where established assets are being upgraded and expanded to meet evolving luxury travel demand.
Leadership Perspective
According to Puneet Chhatwal, the signing highlights the company’s long-term confidence in the economic growth of Assam and the strategic importance of Guwahati.
He noted that the city serves as a commercial, cultural, and tourism gateway to Northeast India, and the introduction of the Taj brand is expected to elevate the city’s luxury hospitality offerings while supporting its growing role as a business and travel hub.
Hotel Design, Dining and Wellness Facilities
The upcoming Taj Guwahati will be designed as an urban retreat reflecting the cultural character of Assam.
Key facilities planned for the hotel include:
-
Multiple specialty restaurants and dining venues
-
Large banqueting and conference facilities
-
Dedicated meeting and event spaces
-
The brand’s signature J Wellness Circle spa
These features are aimed at serving corporate travellers, conferences, destination weddings, and leisure guests visiting the region.
Expanding IHCL’s Presence in Guwahati
With this signing, IHCL continues to expand its footprint in the Northeast. Once operational, the company will have five hotels in Guwahati, including three properties currently under development.
The expansion aligns with IHCL’s broader strategy of strengthening its presence in high-growth secondary and emerging destinations across India, where infrastructure development and tourism demand are rapidly increasing.
