Polo Hotels Launches ‘Clean Sohra, Green Sohra’ Initiative to Support Sustainable Tourism in Meghalaya

Introduction

Polo Hotels Group has introduced a community-focused CSR initiative, ‘Clean Sohra, Green Sohra’, aimed at strengthening waste management and civic infrastructure in Sohra (Cherrapunji), Meghalaya. The programme reflects the growing role of hospitality companies in driving sustainable tourism and responsible destination development.

CSR Initiative Targets Waste Management and Civic Infrastructure

The initiative is being implemented through Polo Hotels Group’s entities—Hotel Polo Towers Limited, Shillong and Manor Floatel Limited, Kolkata—in collaboration with Rotary Guwahati, Luit Trust, and the traditional governing authority, Hima Sohra.

Designed as an on-ground intervention, the programme focuses on improving waste handling systems and enhancing civic monitoring mechanisms in one of Northeast India’s most visited tourism destinations.

Operational Assets Deployed to Strengthen Local Systems

As part of the initiative, Polo Hotels Group has provided essential operational resources to support execution at the local level. These include a Tata 612 tipper truck for waste collection and transportation, four Bajaj Pulsar motorcycles for monitoring and patrolling activities, and signboards placed across key locations to promote public awareness around cleanliness.

These contributions are expected to enhance the efficiency of waste management processes while encouraging responsible behaviour among residents and visitors.

Community Participation and Local Collaboration

The initiative was formally launched at Polo Resort, Cherrapunjee, with active participation from local residents, civic representatives, and industry stakeholders. The involvement of Hima Sohra ensures alignment with traditional governance structures, strengthening implementation at the grassroots level.

This collaborative approach highlights the importance of partnerships between hospitality operators, community bodies, and local organisations in driving sustainable outcomes.

Leadership Emphasises Long-Term Commitment

Kishan Tibrewalla, Chairman and Whole-time Director, Polo Hotels Group, underlined the company’s commitment to responsible hospitality, noting that long-term business success is closely linked to preserving and enhancing local environments.

The initiative is positioned as a step towards ensuring that tourism growth in Sohra remains sustainable and community-centric.

Hospitality’s Role in Sustainable Destination Development

With increasing tourist footfall in destinations like Sohra, the need for structured waste management and civic infrastructure has become more critical. Initiatives such as ‘Clean Sohra, Green Sohra’ demonstrate how hospitality companies can contribute beyond operations, supporting destination management and environmental stewardship.
