A new heritage hospitality destination, Kaziranga Heritage, has been inaugurated near the globally recognised Kaziranga landscape in Assam. The project was formally opened by Himanta Biswa Sarma in the presence of government officials and tourism industry stakeholders. Developed through a Public–Private Partnership between Assam Tourism Development Corporation and Centre Point Hospitality Group, the initiative aims to enhance heritage tourism infrastructure while highlighting the ecological and cultural legacy of the region.
A Heritage Property Rooted in Kaziranga’s History
Kaziranga Heritage is located close to the landscape surrounding Kaziranga National Park, one of India’s most significant wildlife reserves and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the centre of the estate stands Bonani Bungalow, the historic core of the property. Guest records preserved at the bungalow date back to 1938, making it one of the earliest documented hospitality establishments associated with tourism in the Kaziranga region.
Accommodation Across Heritage-Inspired Spaces
The estate offers 28 guest accommodations, thoughtfully distributed across several heritage-inspired structures designed to reflect the character of the region.
These include:
-
Bonani Bungalow with 10 heritage rooms
-
Bonoshree, featuring 8 rooms designed as a cultural salon
-
Kohora River View cottages, offering 6 cottages overlooking nearby floodplains
-
Kunjobon Presidential Suites and duplex units, comprising 4 luxury suites with plunge pools and landscaped courtyards
Each accommodation space is designed to provide guests with a connection to Kaziranga’s natural and cultural environment.
Architecture Inspired by Traditional Assam-Type Design
The property’s architecture follows the traditional Assam-type style, a design approach historically suited to the region’s climate and geography.
Key architectural elements include raised plinths, deep verandahs and sloping roofs, features developed to withstand seasonal monsoon conditions and flooding. Natural materials and elevated structures ensure the buildings remain climate-sensitive while blending into the surrounding landscape.
Culinary Experience Celebrating Assamese Cuisine
Kaziranga Heritage features a 48-seat destination restaurant dedicated to regional Assamese cuisine.
The culinary concept focuses on wood-fired cooking techniques, showcasing traditional recipes prepared using locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant’s design draws inspiration from the iconic Assamese Jaapi, a traditional symbol of hospitality.
Ceramic detailing across the structure has been created by Assamese ceramic artist Jaya Boro, adding an artistic dimension to the dining space.
Art, Culture and Conservation at the Core of the Experience
Art and cultural storytelling play a central role in the guest experience at Kaziranga Heritage.
The estate displays artworks by Assamese artist Mridu Moshum Bora, highlighting themes of Vaishnavite traditions, wildlife landscapes and regional dance forms.
The property also preserves archival wildlife photographs associated with conservationist Edward Pritchard Gee, reflecting Kaziranga’s conservation journey.
In addition, the project pays tribute to prominent cultural figures such as Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg, acknowledging their influence on Assam’s cultural identity.
Strengthening Assam’s Heritage Tourism Landscape
The launch of Kaziranga Heritage represents a significant step in strengthening tourism infrastructure in Assam. By combining heritage architecture, regional cuisine, art, and conservation storytelling, the project highlights how hospitality development can support sustainable tourism while preserving cultural and ecological heritage.
The Public–Private Partnership model between ATDC and Centre Point Hospitality Group also demonstrates a collaborative approach to expanding tourism offerings in one of India’s most ecologically important destinations.
