India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced that it now has more than 1,000 women pilots in its workforce, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation sector. With this achievement, the airline becomes the first in India to cross the 1,000-women-pilot mark, positioning itself among the global leaders in gender representation within the cockpit.
Women currently account for 17.5% of IndiGo’s total pilot workforce, a figure the airline notes is more than three times the global industry average. The milestone highlights a growing shift toward greater gender participation in aviation, a sector historically dominated by men.
Women Representation Across IndiGo’s Workforce
The milestone reflects a broader diversity trend across the airline’s workforce. Women today make up over 45% of IndiGo’s total employees, reflecting the company’s focus on creating more inclusive opportunities across departments.
Beyond the cockpit, women play a significant role in multiple operational and corporate functions. They represent over 30% of the airport operations workforce, nearly 25% of employees in the Operations Control Centre, more than 20% in finance roles, and over 15% within digital teams. Additionally, women hold more than 23% of leadership positions across the organization.
Leadership Perspective on the Milestone
Commenting on the achievement, Sukhjit Singh Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo, stated that the airline’s progress reflects its ongoing commitment to empowering women in aviation.
He noted that reaching the milestone of over 1,000 women pilots demonstrates the company’s “Girl Power” spirit and its broader mission to create pathways for talented women to build long-term careers in the aviation industry.
Celebrating Women in Aviation
To commemorate the milestone around International Women’s Day, IndiGo also released a digital film celebrating women employees across the organization. The short film showcases the journeys and achievements of women working in various roles within the airline, highlighting their contributions to aviation.
Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at IndiGo
IndiGo’s diversity efforts are driven by its EMBRACE initiative, a programme focused on promoting diversity, equity, belonging, and accessibility across the workplace.
Under this framework, the airline supports several initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities for women and underrepresented groups. Programmes such as Take-Off 2.0 help women return to professional careers after a break, while the 6E Girl Power Community provides mentorship, networking, and support platforms for women employees.
These initiatives reflect the airline’s broader goal of building a workplace culture that encourages participation, leadership, and career growth for women across all functions.
A Growing Shift in Global Aviation
The milestone also underscores India’s growing role in improving gender representation in aviation. With women pilots accounting for a higher share of the workforce than the global average, IndiGo’s achievement highlights how airlines in the region are helping reshape industry norms and create more inclusive career pathways in aviation.
