IHCL Signs Gateway Dirang, Expands North East Portfolio to 21 Hotels

Introduction

Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has expanded its footprint in the North East with the signing of Gateway Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, a 70-key greenfield project. The development reinforces the company’s strategy of entering emerging leisure destinations while strengthening its regional portfolio.

Strategic Location and Market Relevance

Situated in the West Kameng district, Dirang is gaining traction as a tourism destination, supported by improved connectivity and its position on the route to Tawang. The location has seen rising interest from leisure travellers and adventure tourists, making it a key stop in Arunachal Pradesh’s evolving tourism circuit.

The signing reflects IHCL’s continued focus on identifying underpenetrated markets with long-term growth potential.

Leadership Perspective on Expansion

Commenting on the development, Suma Venkatesh, Executive Vice President – Real Estate & Development at IHCL, noted that Dirang’s natural landscape and accessibility are driving increasing demand.

She highlighted that the project aligns with the company’s approach of pioneering hospitality offerings in emerging destinations, while strengthening its presence across the North East.

Project Overview and Facilities

The upcoming Gateway Dirang will feature 70 rooms, designed to cater to both leisure travellers and destination-driven visitors.

The hotel will include an all-day dining restaurant, a speciality restaurant, and a bar. In addition, it will offer a banquet hall and meeting rooms, supporting both social events and corporate gatherings.

Recreational facilities will include a swimming pool, fitness centre, and spa, enhancing the property’s positioning as a full-service leisure destination.

Partnership and Development Outlook

The project is being developed in partnership with Phurpa Tsering, marking a collaboration aimed at bringing organised hospitality infrastructure to the region.

Tsering noted that the association with IHCL will contribute to the development of sustainable tourism while supporting local economic growth as the destination gains prominence.

Destination Overview

Known for its scenic setting, Dirang is characterised by apple orchards, terraced farms, and pine-covered hills. The region is also recognised for its natural hot water springs, which attract travellers exploring the North East.

Its location en route to Tawang positions it as an essential halt for visitors travelling across Arunachal Pradesh.

Regional Expansion Strategy

With this signing, IHCL’s portfolio in the North East will expand to 21 hotels, including 12 under development. The move underscores the company’s long-term commitment to the region and its strategy of building a presence in emerging tourism markets across India.

The addition of Gateway Dirang signals a continued focus on destination-led growth, aligning with broader industry trends in experiential and nature-based travel.
